New Mexico Acts to Protect Renters and Consumers
In these difficult COVID-19 times, many are out of work or working fewer hours through no fault of their own. Promised stimulus checks have been held up or will come too late. Things are tight. New Mexico has put in place protections for renters and consumers.
Sheriffs have been directed to NOT serve eviction orders. If you are being threatened with eviction, under New Mexico law, except for some very narrow circumstances, you cannot be thrown out without law enforcement first serving an eviction order on you, which cannot happen presently. You cannot be thrown out without the court first holding a hearing. If your landlord is telling you something different, please call us so we can see if we can help.
Repossessions should not be happening. The New Mexico Governor has declared repossession companies to be non-essential businesses for the purpose of repossessing when payments are late. Payday lenders have also been declared non-essential businesses. After April 7, 2020, they should be closed. They should not be open for in-person loans.
